Solid parquet floor in an old Dutch house (built in 1914) - a good idea?

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum - excuse me in advance if something is wrong.

We want to put parquet floor in an old Dutch house built in year 1914. The house has (as most of old houses in NL) a wooden floor structure. We want to put a solid oak parquet (made 100% from oak only) which has a hight of 20mm. It will be on top of chipboard 12mm and an underfloor layer (10DB). The solid parquet is pretty heavy, and we were worried if that is a good choice for an old house with wooden base? Will that wooden base "manage" the heavy parquet load, or should we go for a thinner parquet option?

Many thanks in advance!

No problem.

Will the parquet be glued to the chipboard? In that case you 'll have to screw the chipboard to the wooden base with a lot of screws. Use approx. 10 screws for every m2. with a gap of 5 mm between the chipboard panels and a gap of 10 mm at the side of the walls.

Thanks a lot Walker, this is very useful! Should we take out all the plywood to make sure that the old beams are not rotten or damaged? Or should we just put the chipboard on top of the existing plywood?

Yes, we want to glue the parquet to the chipboard.

Put it on the existing plywood. Together with the beams it is part of the load bearing floor.

Make sure that the plywood is as smooth as possible (no remains of old glue, nails, screws etc).
